To this end, it focuses on the life and work of Gerda Lerner, one of the definitive protagonists of Women's history in the United States and elsewhere. Taking Lerner's "Black Women in White America" (1972), one of the first anthologies of African American history in the U.S., as a case study, the essay, first, expands on previous genealogies of intersectionality by elaborating on how an Ashkenazi Jewish woman of Viennese descent developed a race and class conscious women's history and thus practiced intersectional women’s history avant la lettre. Second, it shows "Black Women in White America" was one of the earliest arenas where disputes about the legitimacy of speaking positions and the ownership of intellectual labor were fought, similar to those prominently debated and fiercely contested today.... view less
