The conditions of public communication have changed significantly as a result of digitalization. This can be seen, for example, in the multiplication of media channels and products, an accelerated and more flexible production and reception of messages, and the algorithmically personalized distribution of content. According to public and communication science debates, these changes seem primarily to promote disintegration and social polarization. Despite their existence, socially functional, integrating phenomena receive little attention. Moreover, disintegration and integration are usually interdependent at different levels. Finally, existing theories and research on (dis-)integration through communication refers predominantly to mass media. However, these make up only a part of public communication today and are themselves in a constant process of change. In order to reflect the eminent importance of the digital transformation of (public) communication for disintegration as well as for integration on different levels, this paper proposes a theoretical framework. It will allow the systematization, classification and connection of a wide range of research questions in the field. (Dis-)integration is understood as the interplay of communicative and social (Dis-)integration. Phenomena of communicative (dis-)integration are directly related to the changing conditions of digital communication and correspond to social (dis-)integration. The paper explains the framework and discusses its elements and their interdependencies using various examples.... view less
