The paper discusses two dominant models of institutionalism, sociological and eco-nomic neo-institutionalism, with a critical view on their shortcomings (sections I and II). The criticism of these - by industrial sociologists mostly favored - approaches is succeeded by an elaboration of a new approach, called 'extended (actor-centered) institutionalism'. It brings together two theoretical threads to analyzing action and structure as linked processes (III). Finally, a case study on the genesis and the socio-political effects of co-determination in the coal and steel industry is added. It shall serve to demonstrate the explanatory capability of the frame of reference outlined before (IV).The paper discusses two dominant models of institutionalism, sociological and eco-nomic neo-institutionalism, with a critical view on their shortcomings (sections I and II).
