Demokratie und Autorität stehen in einem Spannungsverhältnis: Als eine asymmetrische, auf Zuerkennung von Überlegenheit beruhende Anerkennungsbeziehung verstanden, läuft Autorität sowohl dem Anspruch auf Gleichheit als auch dem demokratischen Prinzip der Kritik zuwider. Wie anhand von Hannah Arendts Revitalisierung der römischen auctoritas-potestas-Unterscheidung in ihrer Konzeption der republikanischen Demokratie gezeigt werden soll, sind mit Autorität jedoch bestimmte ordnungspolitische Leistungen für die Demokratie verbunden. Um diese Leistungen erfassen zu können, wird im Anschluss an Arendt eine begriffstheoretische Schärfung des zwischen legitimer Herrschaft und kommunikativer Macht stehenden Autoritätskonzepts vorgeschlagen.... view less

The relationship between democracy and authority is a tense one: Authority when seen as an asymmetrical relation of recognition based on granting superiority to someone else runs counter to the claim for equality as well as the principle of criticism both of which are vital to democracy. Authority, however, is associated with certain regulative performances for democracy as shall be shown based on Hannah Arendt’s revitalisation of the Roman distinction between auctoritas and potestas in her concept of republican democracy. In order to allow for these performances to be captured, a suggestion is made, following Arendt, to theoretically sharpen the concept of authority as standing between legitimate rule and communicative power.... view less
