Neben seinen gegenwartsbezogenen Thesen zeichnet sich Rosanvallons Werk vor allem durch eine innovative Methode der historischen Reflexion aus. Der Artikel würdigt Rosanvallons Beitrag zur ideengeschichtlichen Methodendebatte, indem er seine Variante einer Begriffs- und Problemgeschichte mit den Ansätzen der Cambridge School und der Begriffsgeschichte kontrastiert. Zudem wird nach dem normativen Status und der Verallgemeinerbarkeit der Grundannahmen über den französischen Fall hinaus gefragt. Die von Claude Lefort beeinflusste Perspektive auf die Demokratie bildet dabei eine genuin politiktheoretische Komponente von Rosanvallons Unternehmen, die letzteres für die Politische Theorie attraktiver macht als die 'antiquarische' Forschung Skinners oder die semantischen Analysen Kosellecks.... view less

The work of Pierre Rosanvallon includes not only observations on contemporary democracy, but also a specifically historical method. The article assesses his contribution to the field of conceptual history by contrasting the approaches of Rosanvallon, Skinner and Koselleck. It is argued that Rosanvallon, by drawing on an understanding of the political introduced by his teacher Claude Lefort, is able to offer a perspective on conceptual history that is especially attractive for Political Theory. In a second step, the question of the role of normativity within conceptual history is raised. The article concludes by discussing the possibility of a specifically French bias.... view less
