The requisition of visibility as a political practice, authentic self-display and indisputable fact suggest that society is undergoing change - a transformation of the "economy of visibility". Despite - or because of - the countless outings of activists and stars, the narratives of families and friends, it is not being lesbian or gay which is now taken as a matter of course, but the practice of coming out. The act of becoming visible has itself become the signum of homosexuality.... view less
