Psychosomatische Medizin als akademische Disziplin hat in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten eine ambivalente Entwicklung durchlaufen: Sie erlebte einen erfolgreichen Institutionalisierungs- und Professionalisierungsprozess, währenddessen verblassten allerdings die ursprünglich entscheidenden Fragen nach dem Zusammenhang von psychischen Konflikten und körperlichen Krankheiten an der Schnittstelle von Körper, Psyche und Gesellschaft, während der Bedarf nach psychosomatischen Behandlungsmethoden stetig steigt. The debate about the link between mental conflicts and somatic diseases at the interface of body, psyche and society has quieted down, whereas the demand for psychosomatic therapies continues to grow.
