This essay examines marked, if entirely inconclusive, changes in the landscape of social studies of technology over the past two decades. Admittedly colored autobiographically, it points to various attempts to overcome the "otherness" imposed on technical artefacts and networks by sociologists and to bring them back into the social realm. Three factors are made responsible for the fact that students of technology had to open their discourse for this problematic: the advent of computers, the competition from popular media, and the claims to high social theory advanced by unorthodox science and technology studies. The future development of the field, thus the closing argument, will hinge on the outcome of a fundamental controversy between approaches inspired by evolutionary biology - "naturalizing history" - and culturalist approaches - "historializing nature". What kind of theory effects of social studies of science and technology will find their way into social practice will depend on the course this controversy will take. And so will the politics of expertise practitioners of science and technology studies will see themselves confronted with.... view less
