Before the collapse of the Iron Curtain, Tirana, the capital city of Albania, was the most important and diversified industrial location in the country. It held on to this role in the post-socialist era, but industrial production in Albania plummeted by approx. 60% as a consequence of the failure of planned economy (1991), while latest in a series of state crises (1997/98) almost sounded the death knell. This constant interruption in transformation is a special feature of Albanian development. Two types of industrial location can now be observed in and around Tirana: start-ups in peripheral locations ("greenfield") are modern, businesslike and production-guered buildings with good infrastructure connections. However, their production range is slim. Transformation in the older industrial locations from the communist era that are located in the city or the direct surroundings ("brownfield") has led to a colourful mixture of differing uses. In addition to commercial production, one can observe trade, storage, informal residence and vacancy. In terms of industrial production, commissioned processing in the textile and leather clothing sector and the production of building materials hold a significant (above-average) position; food production and the production of small furniture are dwindling in importance. A general problem in industrial production is the high degree of dependency on foreign companies and a low level of industrial economy networking within Albania.... view less
