"This paper analyses research findings of a study on career opportunities of women and men as academics at university. The study shows that different notions of profession and family in the academic disciplines have an impact an career opportunities. The paper asks in how far these findings can be described with Bourdieu's concept of social fields and also with Helga Krüger's conception of territories. This comparison allows us to see that Bourdieu's concept of the social field shows the foreground of professional work as well as the private background and therefore a specific ambiguity."
