"It is difficult to justify the standard use of the nation state as the sole context in which empirical research is placed. Taking up this critique of 'methodological nationalism' the paper asks how the cases under empirical scrutiny can be related to a variety of macro-social contexts and potentially transnational contexts, too. On the basis of the Documentary Method we develop bottom- up and top-down strategies thereby including contexts on different levels into the construction of typologies."
