'Der elektronische Zugriff auf die Quellen': zum Entwicklungsstand digitaler Bestandserschließung

Abstract

Die am Kölner Zentralarchiv für empirische Sozialforschung, bzw. dem Zentrum für Historische Sozialforschung von November 1998 bis März 1999 durchgeführte Untersuchung will einen Beitrag zur Gewinung eines besseren Überblicks über das Forschungsgebiet 'digitaler Bestandserschließung' leisten und die dort vorhandenen hauptsächlichen Problemstellungen und Entwicklungstendenzen herausarbeiten. Der Beitrag berichtet über Design und Ergebnisse dieser Untersuchung. Mittelfristig sollen Information, Orientierung und Kommunikation in diesem Bereich verbessert werden. Langfristig muß es darum gehen, dem Feld der digitalen Bestandserschließung durch Abstraktion, Begriffsbildung, Strukturierung und Segmentierung ein referenzfähiges theoretisches und methodisches Gerüst zu geben. 'Libraries, archives and other institutions hold large collections of historical documents of all type and relevant to the humanities. The electronic accessibility of these holdings offers wide new research opportunities. The article summarizes a study on 75 research-projects (mainly located in Germany) aiming on new forms of availability of digital collections. It tries to give an overview on the main trends in the field of accessing data through. Furthermore a rough model for the whole process of developing these holdings is proposed. This consists of three parts: the representation (by digitization), the description (by metadata) and the publication (via user-interfaces) of the material. The single steps of the process are described and evaluated in their different state of development.' (author's abstract)
