"Je niedriger das Einkommen, desto seltener engagieren sich Menschen ehrenamtlich. Und je länger Bürger in Armut leben, desto weniger sind sie zu freiwilligem Engagement bereit. Materielle Verarmung als solche kann die Abkehr vom Ehrenamt aber nur in Teilen erklären. An das Einkommen geknüpfte Bildungswege spielen ebenfalls eine Rolle, ebenso wie Persönlichkeitsmerkmale. Obwohl ihr Engagement nachlässt, halten deshalb Absteiger aus der Mittelschicht eher am Ehrenamt fest als das Gros der Armen. "The lower the income, the less people volunteer. The longer they live in poverty, the less inclined they are to work on a voluntary basis. Material impoverishment can only partially explain turning away from voluntary work though. Education and personality also play an important role. Even though people are volunteering less, those who have drifted from a higher to a lower social class are more likely to keep doing voluntary work than the majority of poor people.
