"The dead do not lie": die Bedeutung des Todes im politisch motivierten Suizid im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert

Abstract

"Als 'altruistischen Suizid' bezeichnete Durkheim (1897) Selbsttötungen, die aus einer 'zu starken' Integration in die Gesellschaft erfolgen und deshalb nicht als Selbst-Mord verfemt werden, sondern Anerkennung als heroisches Opfer finden. Als Relikt eines archaischen Kollektivbewusstseins war diese Form für ihn zum Aussterben verdammt. Im Verlaufe des 20. Jahrhunderts verschwand dieser Typ jedoch keineswegs, sondern es entstanden sogar neue Formen wie das Selbstmordattentat, das Todesfasten und der Protestsuizid. Im Artikel soll behandelt werden, was zum Aufstieg dieser Phänomene geführt hat und wie sie am besten zu analysieren sind. Unter dem Fokus auf die textlichen Inszenierungen soll herausgearbeitet werden, wie Sterben zu einem kommunikativen Akt wird und der eigene Tod so als politische Waffe eingesetzt werden kann." "'Altruistic Suicide' was the name Durkheim (1897) applied to self-killings that result from a 'too strong' integration into society, and which are thus not ostracized as self-murder but rather acknowledged as heroic sacrifice. For Durkheim, this form was destined for extinction as a relic of archaic collective consciousness. In the course of the 20th century, however, this type of suicide by no means disappeared; on the contrary, new forms like the suicide attack, the hunger strike and the protest suicide evolved. This article deals with what gave rise to these phenomena and how they can best be analyzed. Focusing on textual representations, it will elaborate upon how dying is transformed into a communicative act and how one's own death can thus be used as a political weapon." (author's abstract)
