'The author argues that over the past two hundered years the pressure to commit oneself to sexual partners of either one sex or the other has increased and has paradoxically become even more pronounced thanks to moves toward greater sexual liberation over the past twenty-five-years. This monosexual preoccupation has been backed by essentialist theories on homo- and heterosexuality. Recent constructionist thinking is one sign that these strict alternatives are losing their hold and is encouraging a move away form a fixation on one sex. In the author's view it is likely that in future many peoply will seek sexual encounters with partners of both sexes. This is quite different from the traditional term 'bisexual' since 'bisexuality' only exists as long as it is customary to think in terms of 'homo-' and 'heterosexuality'.'
