'This article examines how methodologies and methods of researching social problems can take into account that these problems are attributable less to the individual subjects of the study themselves than to their positions in the social sphere, which are determined, in Bourdieu's sense, by a 'network of relations'. The results of a study are presented, which by comparing the biographies, with regard to educational achievement, of subjects with a migrant background to those without a migrant background, illustrates the effects of dislocation from one's social origins structurally related to educational achievement. In particular, it is shown that findings commonly considered typical to migration might also be considered typical to advancement. The structural demands connected with displacement from the social milieu of the place or family of origin are clarified and common forms of managing experiences of difference typical to advancement reconstructed.'
