(Autorenreferat)... view less

'This article compares methods which are supposed to model context effects. Comparison is done in a methodological perspective as well as empirically. First, important preconditions for the context to affect individual level phenomena will be discussed. In a second step traditional methods to model context effects - the separate analysis of contextual units, the modeling of dummy-variables and the explicit modeling of contextual influence - will be contrasted with multi level models that allow to estimate random coefficients. In a third step both the traditional and random coefficient methods are compared within an empirical application. The dependent variable in the empirical analyses is the political information behavior during the election campaign. The context analyses are based on survey data for the North-Rhine-Westfalian State election 1995 in Cologne. It can be seen that models with random coefficients are much more flexible with respect to substantive postulates as well as methodological assumptions. For many empirical applications random coefficient models will therefore be more adequate than traditional methods of context analysis. However, this greater flexibility does not necessarily lead to diverging results as the empirical analyses in this article are able to show.' (author's abstract)|... view less
