'In the last two decades, the economic importance of creativity played an increasingly prominent role for discourses on culture and the arts. This article wants to understand the contemporary development in the context of a larger historical framework. Current approaches to creativity display different forms of comprehending artists and arts: the images of the genius artist, corresponding with the modern idea of man and the economic requirements of emerging capitalism, as well as several movements that criticize this understanding. At the same time, the economisation of creativity corresponds to more general neo-liberal concepts of society and economy. This connectedness finally is being discussed against the background of theories of hegemony and is being assessed with regard to the practical consequences for the creative industries and the cultural creatives.'
