'Based on analyses of 83 cases of the Viennese court of criminal justice, it is argued that black African drug dealers are in fact subject to harsher sentencing than their white peers. Detailed reviews indicate that these sentences cannot completely be explained by the fact that the Africans are usually apprehended with more contraband than their white counterparts. The article questions claims of Viennese police officials and judges that black drug dealers are members of organized crime - the so-called 'Nigerian drug mafia'. The harsher sentencing of African drug dealers probably results form selective practices by the police and the courts.' (author's abstract)... view less
