As heatwaves increase in frequency and intensity due to climate change, heat protection has become an urgent planetary health issue, especially in urban neighborhoods affected by heat-island effects. This practice insight shares results of the iterative and participatory development of a science communication workshop to increase knowledge, enhance self-efficacy and exchange among citizens in local communities. The workshop setting, content and facilitation were tested in three pilot workshops. A mixed-methods evaluation combined pre- and post-surveys, observations, and focus group discussions. Results showed that participants significantly increased their knowledge and self-efficacy regarding heat protection behaviors and valued the workshops as spaces for dialogue and support. This article focuses on the qualitative results which informed iterative adaptations of the workshops’ content, interactive phases, and evaluation methods. Challenges remained in reaching diverse groups and fostering long-term engagement. The project delivers valuable outcomes for multiple audiences: an extensive evaluation report for all interested stakeholders, this publication for researchers and practitioners, and a ready-to-use workshop package for communities. It exemplifies the development of participatory, research-based formats on planetary health and emphasizes that heat protection means caring for yourself, others, and the environment we share.... view less
