Mapping Environmental Protests in Russia

Abstract

While environmental protests in Russia represent a prominent form of civic activism, they exhibit consider- able regional variation. Based on a panel analysis of over 1,000 protest events from 2007 to 2021, this study maps environmental mobilization across Russian regions and identifies factors influencing environmental protest intensity. We develop a typology of regional eco-mobilization and analyze its relationship with socio- economic and political variables.
