Accessing children's perspectives through participatory photo interviews

Abstract

Mit diesem Artikel wollen wir zur entstehenden Debatte über Kind-zentrierte Forschungsmethoden beitragen, indem wir die Anwendung von partizipativen Foto-Interviews für das Verstehen kindlicher Erfahrungen mit Haushaltgeräten reflektieren. Mittels Foto-Interviews wird versucht, Kinder als aktive Forschungsteilnehmer/innen einzubeziehen, indem ihnen Kameras gegeben und sie eingeladen werden, unterschiedlichste Aspekte ihres Alltagslebens zu fotografieren. Später werden die Fotos im Rahmen von Interviews genutzt, um gemeinsam die subjektive Bedeutung der Fotos zu besprechen. Wir beschäftigen uns im Folgenden damit, wie Kinder auf die Forschungsaufgaben eingegangen sind und im Besonderen mit ethnografischen Einsichten, die aus der Betrachtung der Kommentare erwachsen sind, die Kinder abgaben, nachdem sie gebeten worden waren, ihre Fotos zu erläutern. Unserer Erfahrung mit diesem Bild-basierten Ansatz ist, dass die kindlichen Reaktionen auf den Forschungskontext das Interpretieren durchaus erschwerten, das diese Reaktionen aber zugleich unbedingt gewürdigt werden mussten, um tatsächlich Nutzen aus den Foto-Interviews ziehen zu können.

In this article we seek to contribute to the emerging conversation on child-centered research methods by reflecting on the use of participatory photo interviewing to understand children's experiences with household technology. Participatory photo interviews attempt to engage children as active research participants by giving them cameras and inviting them to take pictures dealing with various aspects of their lives. The photos are later used in the interview process to jointly explore the subjective meaning of the images. We focus here on how children oriented to the research task, and in particular, on the ethnographic insights obtained by attending to the different kinds of commentaries evoked as children were asked to explain their photographs. Our experience with this image-based approach suggests that children's reactions to the research context complicate the task of interpretation but are essential to acknowledge if researchers are to make full use of the potential of photo interviews.

En este artículo tratamos de contribuir a la conversación emergente en los métodos de investigación centrados en los niños al reflexionar sobre el uso de las entrevistas de fotografía participativa para comprender las experiencias de los niños con la tecnología del hogar. Las entrevistas de fotografía participativa pretenden involucrar a los niños como participantes activos en la investigación, dándoles cámaras e invitándolos a tomar fotografías sobre diversos aspectos de sus vidas. Las fotos son utilizadas luego en el proceso de entrevista para explorar conjuntamente el significado subjetivo de las imágenes. Aquí nos enfocamos en cómo los niños se orientaron a la tarea de investigación y, en particular, sobre los conocimientos etnográficos obtenidos al prestar atención a los diferentes tipos de comentarios evocados cuando se pidió a los niños explicar sus fotografías. Nuestra experiencia con este enfoque basado en la imagen sugiere que las reacciones de los niños al contexto de la investigación complican la tarea de interpretación, pero son esenciales para reconocer si los investigadores pueden hacer uso pleno del potencial de las entrevistas fotográficas.
