Emotional heritage and historical images of the Shoah are passed on between generations and are constantly renewed in institutional and discursive contexts of contemporary society. So far, the intergenerational transmission of narratives and emotional inheritances about the Shoah in Germany has been empirically documented, but hardly discussed with regard to educators and their mediating role. The study presented in the article explores this connection on the basis of interviews and group discussions that were conducted with teachers from West and East German federal states as part of an ethnography in a further education at a memorial in Israel. The emotional inheritance and narratives of teachers are reconstructed regarding their biographical references to the Shoah as well as their teaching goals for their students. The findings show how teachers look for their own stories, emotional connections and ability to act in the dissonance between the public culture of remembrance to the Shoah and (non-) processing of the history within families.... view less
