Tagungsbericht: "Methodologien des Systems – Wie kommt man zum Fall und wie dahinter?"

Abstract

The international conference on "Methodologies of the System" provided an inventory of empirical research informed by systems theory. In eight parallel workshops on topics such as "Organization," "Interaction," and "Semantics," more than twenty different empirical research projects were discussed. The workshops were framed by eight keynote lectures on "Methodology and Systems Theory," "Theory as Methodology," "Method and Methodology," as well as "Methodological Imports." In this conference report I will summarize the main topics of the conference and connect them with current approaches to empirical research with systems theory. The following questions will be answered: Which position do studies inspired by systems theory take within the sociological discussions about methods? Which analytical advancements are possible and necessary? Does a "unity" of systems theoretical research exist? Did the conference produce an appearance of unity, which does not represent the plurality of different approaches? Systems theoretical approaches seek access to empirical fields in very different ways. In the process, those approaches seem particularly productive which focus on the empirical interest and not on the faithfulness to their own theory. Given that different approaches presented at this conference produced sound arguments about how to deal with empirical data, it would be counterproductive to implement a rigid canon of method systems theoretical research. The commensurability of a specific method or methodology needs to be extracted from the empirical case and its needs. The conference showed that systems theoretical research and empirical concerns mate. However, it showed as well the misunderstandings that this approach possibly feeds by its terminology and self-descriptions.

La conferencia internacional sobre "Metodologías del sistema" brindó un inventario de investigación empírica formado intelectualmente por la teoría de sistemas. En ocho grupos paralelos de trabajo sobre tópicos tales como "Organización", "Interacción" y "Semántica", se discutieron más de veinte diferentes proyectos de investigaciones empíricas. Los grupos de trabajo fueron armados en función de ocho conferencias magistrales sobre "Metodología y teoría de sistemas", "Teoría como metodología", "Método y metodología", así como "Importaciones metodológicas". En este reporte de conferencia se hace un resumen de los principales tópicos de la conferencia y se conectan a los enfoques actuales sobre investigación empírica y teoría de sistemas Las siguientes preguntas serán contestadas: ¿Qué posición toman los estudios inspirados por la teoría de sistemas en las discusiones sociológicas acerca de los métodos? ¿Cuales avances analíticos son posibles y necesarios? ¿Existe una "unidad" en las investigaciones teóricas de sistemas? ¿Produjo la conferencia una apariencia de unidad, que no representa la pluralidad de los diferentes enfoques? Los enfoques teóricos de sistemas buscan acceder al terreno empírico de diferentes maneras. En el proceso, parecen particularmente productivos esos enfoques que atiende a un interés empírico y no a la fidelidad hacia su propia teoría. Dado que los diferentes enfoques presentados en esta conferencia produjeron argumentos acertados sobre como tratar con datos empíricos, podría ser contraproducente implementar un canon rígido del método de investigación teórica de sistemas. La conmensurabilidad de un método o metodología específicos necesita extraerse del caso empírico y sus necesidades. La conferencia mostró que la investigación teórica de sistemas y las preocupaciones empíricas se emparentan. Sin embargo, se mostraron también los malos entendidos que este enfoque posiblemente alimenta mediante su terminología y sus propias descripciones.

Die dreitägige, international besetzte Tagung "Methodologien des Systems – Wie kommt man zum Fall und wie dahinter?" bot eine Bestandsaufnahme systemtheoretisch informierter empirischer Forschung. In acht parallel laufenden Workshops zu Themen wie "Organisation", "Interaktion" oder "Semantik" wurden über zwanzig empirische Forschungsprojekte vorgestellt und diskutiert. Gerahmt wurden diese Praxis-Workshops durch acht Vorträge zu den Themenkomplexen "Methodologie und Systemtheorie", "Theorie als Methodologie", "Methode und Methodologie" sowie "Methodologieimporte". Der Tagungsbericht versucht, die maßgeblichen Inhalte und Ergebnisse der Tagung zu systematisieren und mit der aktuellen systemtheoretischen Methodendiskussion zu verbinden. Dabei sind folgende Fragen zu beantworten: Welche Stellung nehmen systemtheoretisch inspirierte Studien innerhalb der soziologischen Methodendiskussion ein? Welche aktuellen analytischen Weiterentwicklungen sind möglich und notwendig? Gibt es überhaupt "die" systemtheoretisch informierte empirische Forschung oder produziert eine solche Tagung eine Einheitszumutung, die der Pluralität der unterschiedlichen Zugänge nicht gerecht wird? Systemtheoretische Zugänge, das wird deutlich werden, nähern sich der Empirie sehr unterschiedlich. Besonders ergiebig scheinen dabei Ansätze zu sein, die sich vor allem für die Empirie – und weniger für die Geschlossenheit der eigenen Theorieanlage – interessieren. Gerade die Qualität der auf dieser Tagung verhandelten Ansätze spricht dafür, keinen starren Methodenkanon systemtheoretisch-empirischer Forschung zu implementieren, sondern am empirischen Fall zu entscheiden, welche Forschungsmethoden und theoretischen Öffnungen angemessen sind. Die Tagung hat gezeigt, dass systemtheoretische Forschung bei weitem nicht so "empirieblind" ist, wie ihr häufig vorgeworfen wird, aber auch, welche begriffs- und habitusinduzierten Missverständnisse diesen Vorwurf möglicherweise nähren.
