The Researcher's Place in Qualitative Inquiries: Un-fulfilled Promises?

Abstract

Aktuelle emanzipatorische oder konstruktivistische Ansätze in der Psychologie stimmen – ebenso wie Ansätze partizipativer Handlungsforschung oder kritische ethnographische Studien – darin überein, daß sie die Beziehung zwischen Forschenden und Beforschten als weitgehend symmetrisch, dialogisch, kooperativ und respektvoll erachten, und daß sie davon ausgehen, daß die beidseitige Subjektivität im Forschungsprozeß bedeutsam und zu akzeptieren ist. Obwohl diese Art der Beziehungswahrnehmung und -definition eine Epistemologie nahelegt, die sich notwendig von der in traditionellen Untersuchungsdesigns vorherrschenden unterscheidet, scheint es zweifelhaft, ob und inwieweit dieser neue Modus auch in die Praxis qualitativer Forschung Eingang gefunden hat. Deshalb werden in dem vorliegenden Beitrag – ausgehend von einem Überblick über theoretische Arbeiten – verschiedene empirische Untersuchungen (und auch die eigene Forschungserfahrung) hinzugezogen, und es wird die Umsetzung dieser theoretischen Grundannahmen diskutiert. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird die aktuelle Beschreibung bzw. Fassung der Forschenden-Beforschten-Interaktion in Frage gestellt und eine Revision entweder der theoretischen Grundannahmen oder der Forschungspraxis gefordert.

Recent research approaches in psychology, such as emancipatory, cooperative, constructionist, participatory-action-research, and critical ethnographic research, coincide in proposing a relationship between the researcher and his/her informants characterized by symmetry, dialog, cooperation, and mutual respect, as well as the co-involvement of both participants' subjectivity throughout the research process. Though this way of conceiving their relationship suggests an epistemology which diverges from the one that has oriented traditional research, we wonder how far this new mode of relating is being carried into practice, how much it is being understood, and how it is being implemented. In this paper, and based on a review of theoretical works, empirical reports on qualitative research, and my own research experience, I try to contribute some information on the different meanings and forms these proposals are taking in practice, as well as the different procedures that are being applied to fulfill them. The diversity so encountered leads to a questioning of the interaction between research practice and the epistemology implicit in the approaches in question, and hence, to a call for a review of either the assumptions on which the researcher-informant relationship is based or the way they are being put into practice.

Enfoques recientes de investigación en psicología, como la investigación emancipadora, cooperativa, construccionista, investigación-acción-participativa, etnografía crítica, coinciden en proponer un modelo de relación entre investigador/a e informantes caracterizado por la simetría, dialogicidad, colaboración y respeto mutuos, así como la co-implicación de la subjetividad de ambos a lo largo del proceso investigativo. Si bien esta forma de concebir dicha relación sugiere una epistemología diferente a la que ha orientado a la investigación tradicional, nos preguntamos en qué medida se está cumpliendo este nuevo modo de relación, de qué manera se está entendiendo y cómo se está implementando. En este artículo y con base en el análisis de trabajos teóricos, reportes empíricos de investigación cualitativa y mi propia experiencia de investigación, aporto algunos elementos que den cuenta de los diversos significados y modalidades que adoptan estos planteamientos en la práctica, así como de los diferentes procedimientos que se emplean para satisfacerlos. Esta diversidad nos lleva a cuestionar la confluencia entre la praxis investigativa con la epistemología propuesta en los enfoques mencionados y por ende a plantear ya sea la revisión de los supuestos que orientan la relación investigador/a-informante o la forma de llevarlos a la práctica.
