Front-Line Care Providers' Professional Worlds: The Need for Qualitative Approaches to Cultural Interfaces

Abstract

Der folgende Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit den professionellen Welten und dem professionellen Handeln von Gesundheitsversorgungsanbietern unter einer kulturellen Perspektive. Es wird davon ausgegangen, dass der/die einzelne Professionelle notwenig an den Schnittstellen von multiplen persönlichen, professionellen und Organisationskulturen agiert. Es soll gezeigt werden, dass qualitative Verfahren für diejenigen, die solche Versorgungseinrichtungen beforschen, besser zur Beschreibung von Kulturen und von den Schnittstellen zwischen ihnen geeignet sind als quantitative Methoden. Dies wird konzeptuell am Beispiel von psychiatrischem Pflegepersonal dargestellt. Professionelles Handeln wird hier als Handeln zwischen Pflege-, Psychiatrie- und spezifischer Organisationskultur verstanden. Als empirisches Material werden die niedergeschriebenen Berichte von 25 Psychiatrischen Krankenschwestern aus verschiedenen staatlichen Gesundheitseinrichtungen hinzugezogen.

This paper re-conceives the professional worlds of health and mental health care providers from cultural perspectives and argues that individual providers live (professionally) at the interface between multiple personal, professional, and organizational cultures. It also argues that qualitative methods afford services researchers better opportunities to describe the cultures and characterize their interfaces. A conceptual discussion of psychiatric nurses' professional worlds in the interfaces among nursing and psychiatric medical cultures as well as organizational culture is presented. Qualitative analysis of 25 individual psychiatric nurses' written comments on their professional work and lives in public sector mental health service agencies are discussed.

Este trabajo reconsidera los mundos profesionales de los proveedores de atención en salud y salud mental desde perspectivas culturales y argumenta que los individuos cuidadores viven (profesionalmente) en la interfase entre múltiples culturas personales, profesionales y organizacionales. También argumenta que los métodos cualitativos proveen a los investigadores de servicios mejores oportunidades para describir las culturas y caracterizar sus interfases. Se presenta una discusión conceptual acerca de los mundos profesionales de enfermeras psiquiátricas en las interfases entre las culturas de la enfermería, la psiquiatría médica y la cultura organizacional. Se discute el análisis cualitativo de comentarios escritos de 25 enfermeras psiquiátricas acerca de su trabajo profesional y de su vida en agencias de servicio de salud mental del sector público.
