Modern universities at the crossroad of globalization: problems and perspectives

Abstract

Globalization leads to the transformation of the systems of higher education all over the world as well as to dramatic changes in the role and place of universities in the life of modern societies. The article reveals main aspects of these changes. It also raises doubt about the focus on competition among universities and preoccupation with international ranking systems that with all their superficial numeric objectivity cannot answer the question about the value of university education as a public good.
