Reflexivity and Subjectivity: A Dialogical Perspective for and on International Relations Theory

Abstract

Ziel dieses Beitrags ist es, die existierende Vorstellungen über Subjektivität und Reflexivität innerhalb der Theorie internationaler Beziehungen (IR) zu diskutieren. Hierzu wird die klassische, positivistisch inspirierte Perspektive mit einer dialogischen Perspektive kontrastiert. Die dialogische Perspektive bemüht sich um eine Integration der spezifischen Verknüpfung von Identität und Alterität. Als reflexives Instrument wird der sog. "Hermeneutical Locus" vorgeschlagen: Dieser soll Möglichkeiten des Zugangs zu Subjektivität eröffnen, ohne in eine Verdinglichung oder in eine reflexive Archäologie der Disziplin IR selbst zu verfallen. In diesem Sinne ist es der Wunsch des vorgestellten, dialogischen Ansatzes, ein reflexives Instrument für und über die Theorie internationaler Beziehungen anzubieten.

The aim of this essay is to discuss the places of the notions of subjectivity and reflexivity within International Relations (IR) theory by contrasting the classical perspective inspired by positivism with a dialogical perspective which tries to fully integrate these notions in its examination of the specific nexus between identity and alterity. This dialogical perspective proposes a reflexive tool, the hermeneutical locus, which is intended to provide a way to assess the subjectivity of the cognised without falling into reification and a reflexive archaeology of the discipline of IR itself. In this sense, a dialogical approach wishes to offer a reflexive tool for and on IR theory.

El objetivo de este trabajo es discutir el lugar de las nociones de subjetividad y de reflexividad dentro de la teoría de las Relaciones Internacionales (RI), al contrastar la perspectiva clásica, inspirada en el positivismo, con una perspectiva dialógica, que trata de integrar plenamente ambas nociones en su examen de los nexos específicos entre identidad y alteridad. Esta perspectiva dialógica propone una herramienta reflexiva, el locus hermenéutico, el cual es un intento por proveer una vía de acceso a la subjetividad del objeto de conocimiento sin caer en la reificación y arqueología reflexiva de la disciplina de las RI mismas. En este sentido, una aproximación dialógica intenta ofrecer una herramienta reflexiva por y sobre la teoría de RI.
