Review Essay: Introducing Students to the Tools of Psychological Research

Abstract

Psychologische Methoden der Datenerhebung und -analyse können für viele Lehrende und Studierende eine sehr entmutigende Aufgabe sein. Auch aus diesem Grund ist das Buch von Nicky HAYES – Doing Psychological Research: Gathering and Analyzing Data (2000) – ein wichtiger Beitrag. Es richtet sich an Studienanfänger(innen) der Psychologie und behandelt sowohl quantitative als auch qualitative Ansätze. Das Buch ist in zwei Teile gegliedert: Teil I behandelt Erhebungsmethoden, Teil II widmet sich den Auswertungsverfahren. Zu jedem Kapitel gibt es Übungen, Arbeitsbeispiele und Fragen, die eine Überprüfung des eigenen Wissenstandes/Lernfortschritts erlauben. In meinem Rezensionsaufsatz diskutiere ich, wie HAYES dieses Material zusammengestellt und präsentiert hat und ob das Buch zum Lernen/Verstehen Studierender beitragen kann. Darüber hinaus erörtere ich, inwieweit HAYES den sich verändernden methodologischen Haltungen in der Psychologie und den Sozialwissenschaften gerecht wird.

Teaching and learning the methods of gathering psychological data and analyzing those data can be a daunting task at best for many instructors and students. Nicky HAYES' book Doing Psychological Research: Gathering and Analyzing Data (2000) represents an important instructional contribution. The text is aimed at beginning psychology students and covers both qualitative and quantitative approaches to doing psychological research. The book is divided into two parts: Part I is concerned with the methods of gathering data; Part II is concerned with data analyses. Each chapter has exercises, worked examples and self-assessment questions. In this review essay I discuss HAYES' approach to this material and whether this approach is beneficial to students' learning and understanding. I also go beyond this to discuss how HAYES' book reflects changing attitudes in psychology and social science concerning research methodology.

Los métodos psicológicos de relevamiento y análisis de datos pueden ser una tarea muy desalentadora para profesores y estudiantes. Por tal motivo, el libro de HAYES es una contribución importante. Se dirige a estudiantes principiantes de psicología y trata tanto principios cuantitativos como también cualitativos. El libro está separado en dos partes: En la primera parte trata los métodos de relevamiento y en la segunda parte se dedica a los procesos de evaluación. En cada capítulo hay ejercicios, ejemplos y preguntas que permiten una evaluación del propio estado de conocimientos y adelantos en el aprendizaje. En este artículo discuto acerca de cómo HAYES ha organizado y presentado este material y si el libro puede contribuir al aprendizaje y a la comprensión de los estudiantes. Además explico en qué medida corresponde HAYES a las cambiantes posturas metodológicas en la psicología y en las ciencias sociales.
