Review Essay: Culture and Identity

Abstract

Francisco VARELA (1996) schlug vor, die Erklärung persönlicher Erfahrung zum "Schlüsseltest" der Tragfähigkeit (natur-) wissenschaftlicher Theorien zu machen. Obwohl sich sowohl Sicher in Kreuzberg als auch Cultural Psychology mit Kultur und Identität befassen, bleiben sie sehr schweigsam hinsichtlich der Selbst-Erfahrung im Alltagsleben. Meine Leseweise, die in Tätigkeitstheorie und reflexiver phänomenologischer Hermeneutik gründet, integriert Analysen meiner autobiographischen Erfahrung von Kultur und Identität auf der einen Seite, und von Sicher in Kreuzberg und Cultural Psychology auf der anderen. Während ich das erste Buch sehr empfehlen kann, bin ich von der Gültigkeit und Brauchbarkeit des zweiten sehr viel weniger überzeugt.

Francisco VARELA (1996) suggested that the ultimate tests of scientific theories are their ability to explain our personal experience. Although Sicher in Kreuzberg and Cultural Psychology are about culture and identity, I found both books silent about experiences of the Self in everyday praxis. Drawing on activity theory and reflexive phenomenological hermeneutics as method and praxis, I provide interpenetrating accounts of analysis of my autobiographical experiences of cultural and identity on the one hand and of Sicher in Kreuzberg and Cultural Psychology on the other. Whereas I highly recommend the first book I am much less convinced by the soundness and usefulness of the second.

Si bien, Sicher in Kreuzberg y Cultural Psychology tratan de la cultura y la identidad, encuentro en estos dos libros omisiones acerca de la identidad (yo) en la práctica cotidiana. Recurriendo a la teoría de la actividad y a la reflexión hermenéutica fenomenológica como métodos y acción, proporciono relatos ínter relacionados del análisis de mi experiencia autobiográfica en cultura e identidad con los de Sicher in Kreuzberg y Cultural Psychology. Mientras que yo recomiendo muy significativamente el primer libro, estoy mucho menos convencido por la profundidad y utilidad del segundo.
