Children who apply for asylum in Germany with family members often live in collective accommodations for asylum seekers for long periods of time. Characteristic features of such accommodations include a lack of privacy, stress and violence due to overcrowding, inadequate protection against violence, social isolation, and limited educational, recreational, and leisure opportunities. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the already precarious living conditions of children in collective accommodations worsened due to a high risk of infection caused by poor hygiene, a lack of social distancing options, and mass quarantines. Drawing on sixteen qualitative problem-centred interviews with adult residents about their experiences during the first and second waves of the pandemic, the article traces how they perceive the living conditions of children in collective accommodations and their own possibilities for action in this regard. It becomes evident that they perceive the children as being endangered in multiple ways and perceive themselves as either incapable or only partially capable of addressing the problems faced by the children.... view less
