Review Essay: Autobiography as Scientific Text: A Dialectical Approach to the Role of Experience

Abstract

Sneaky Kid and Its Aftermath ist eine Erzählung aus erster Hand über den Autor, Harry F. WOLCOTT, und dessen homosexuelles Verhältnis mit seinem Informanten, dem "Sneaky Kid". Zwei Jahre nach deren Trennung kam Brad zurück, verprügelte WOLCOTT, und brannte dessen Haus ab. Autobiographische Texte können Leser dazu verleiten, den Autor und seinen Protagonisten gleichzusetzen. Jede Kritik des Protagonisten würde dann als Kritik des Autors und damit als persönlicher Angriff (ad hominem) verstanden. Um den Unterschied zu markieren, schlage ich vor, die beiden zu differenzieren, d.h. ich beziehe mich zum einen auf den Autor, Harry WOLCOTT, und zum anderen auf den Protagonisten, Wally Haircut. Ich sehe in der Geschichte, die in Sneaky Kid and Its Aftermath erzählt wird, ein stark asymmetrisches Verhältnis zwischen den Protagonisten Wally Haircut und seinem Informanten Brad, das ich in meinem Beitrag mit Hilfe des FOUCAULTschen Konzepts von Wissen/Macht und der BOURDIEUschen Konzeption des ökonomischem, sozialen, kulturellen und symbolischen Kapitals analysiere. Ich zeige, dass Wally Haircut alles zu gewinnen hatte, während sein Informant, der "Sneaky Kid", alles verlor. Unglücklicherweise hat Harry WOLCOTT verpasst, sich auf existierende Sozialtheorien beziehend eine gute Erklärung für die Geschehnisse zu liefern. Mir hat das Buch überhaupt nicht gefallen.

The Sneaky Kid and Its Aftermath is a first-person account of the (sexual) intimacy between a researcher (Harry WOLCOTT) and his research participant (Brad, the sneaky kid). Two years after the events, the sneaky kid returned with a vengeance, beating up the researcher and burning down his house. Autobiographical texts may lead readers to confuse author and literary figure of the same name. Any critique of the protagonist potentially can be read as a critique of the author and therefore as an ad hominem attack—to mark the difference I propose to differentiate the two for the purpose of deconstruction (here, Harry WOLCOTT and Wally Haircut, respectively). In my reading, the relationship between Wally Haircut and Brad is highly unsymmetrical in terms of FOUCAULT's knowledge/power concept and BOURDIEU's analyses of the relations between economic, social, cultural, and symbolic capital. Wally Haircut, I will argue in part, had everything to gain in these dimensions and his research participant, the "sneaky kid," had everything to lose. This is just how it turned out. Unfortunately, Harry WOLCOTT failed to draw on existing social theory to provide a reasonable explanation of the events. I conclude with a "two thumbs down.

El niño soplón y su consecuencia es un relato en primera persona de las intimidades (sexuales) entre un investigador (Harry WOLCOTT) y el participante de su investigación (Brad, el niño soplón). Dos años después de los hechos investigados, el niño soplón volvió con una venganza, dar una paliza al investigador e incendiar su casa. Los textos autobiográficos pueden llevar a los lectores a confundir entre el autor y la figura literaria, identificándolos. Ninguna crítica al posible protagonista puede tomarse como una crítica al autor y, en todo caso, como un ataque ad hominem; para marcar la diferencia yo propongo distinguir los dos con la finalidad de la deconstrucción (aquí, Harry WOLCOTT y Wally Haircut, respectivamente). Según mi lectura, las relaciones entre Wally Haircut y Brad son claramente asiméticras en términos del concepto de conocimiento/poder de FOUCAULT y del análisis de BOURDIEU de las relaciones entre capital económico, social, cultural y simbólico. Wally Haircut, argumentaré en parte, lo tenía todo para ganar en esas dimensiones y el sujeto de su investigación, el "niño soplón", lo tenía todo para perder. Así es justo como se produjo. Desafortunadamente, Harry WOLCOTT falló al utilizar la teoría social existente para proponer una explicación razonable de los acontecimientos. Yo concluyo con "dos desaprobados".
