Review Essay: Evaluation als praktische Hermeneutik – oder: Der weite und steinige Weg von einer Theorie der Praxis zur Praxis der Evaluation

Abstract

Evaluation Practice Reconsidered von Thomas A. SCHWANDT ist – anders der Titel es vielleicht erwarten lässt – ein sehr theoretisches und weitgehend programmatisches Buch. Im Mittelpunkt steht der Versuch, Evaluation als eine Variante praktischer Hermeneutik zu begreifen – mit der Folge, dass es in dem Buch weniger um die Praxis von Evaluation geht als vielmehr um einen – allerdings interessanten, in mancher Hinsicht auch anregenden und weiterführenden – metatheoretischen Rahmen von Evaluation. Wer eher an methodischen Fragen interessiert ist und Antworten auf seine forschungspraktischen Probleme erwartet, darf sich deshalb nicht von dem Titel des Buches täuschen lassen: Auf Evaluationspraxis im Sinne alltäglicher evaluativer Forschungspraxis, ihre Verfahren und Herausforderungen wird nur am Rande eingegangen.

Contrary to what one might have ex­pected from its title, Evaluation Practice Reconsidered by Thomas A. SCHWANDT is a highly theoretical and largely programmatic volume. Its focus is on an attempt to understand evaluation as a variant of practical hermeneutics, with the result that the book is not so much concerned with the actual practice as with a metatheoretical frame­work of evaluation. This framework is interesting and in some respects stimulating, and leads readers on to further issues, but those who are interested in methodological issues and expect answers to their practical research problems should not be misled by the title: evaluation practice, in the sense of the expectations, methods and challenges of everyday research practice, is mentioned only in passing.

Contrario al título, Evaluation Practice Reconsidered de Thomas A. SCHWANDT es un libro muy teórico y programático. Es concepto central de atención para SCHWANDT la evaluación como hermenéutica práctica. Como un resultado de ello, el autor autor discute menos sobre la práctica cotidiana de la evaluación y mas sobre lo metateórico, que es en algunos aspectos, el marco que estimula el debate.
