This article applies a Marxist-feminist concept of labour to the activity of pregnancy and childbirth. The aim is to generate new insights into the organization and practices of childbirth in contemporary societies from a social-theoretical perspective. This analysis leads to three central findings: (1) Worsening conditions for women giving birth, midwives, and gynaecologists, as well as changing birth practices can be explained by identifying childbirth as part of reproductive labour that is devalued in capitalism. (2) The concept of labour can be used to examine paid and unpaid births and their interactions. (3) A Marxist-feminist perspective on childbirth sheds light on instances of resistance and can thus contribute to an emancipatory theory of society. We conclude that, from a Marxistfeminist perspective, the concept of labour can be applied to childbearing and can thus provide new insights for social-theoretical theory as well as deepen our understanding of processes around childbirth.... view less
