The Many Levels of Sports Narration

Abstract

Zumeist dokumentieren Erzählungen über Sport, was in Zeit und Raum geschieht. Ausgehend von dieser traditionellen Verlaufsbeschreibung ist ein Forschungsansatz entstanden, der als strukturale Geschichte des Sports bezeichnet werden kann. Verfahren, die hier zum Einsatz kommen, wollen – vergleichbar der archäologischen Forschung – unter die "Oberfläche" des bloß "Faktischen" gelangen. Ziel ist es, Veränderungen in den sozialen Beziehungen und neue Formen in der Gegenwart zu entdecken – Figurationen von Körperlichkeit, Raum und Zeit. Wenn im ereignisbezogenen Ansatz erzählt und rekapituliert wird, geht es um neue Ansätze des Verstehens und Interpretierens. Beide Ansätze werden üblicherweise von einem dritten Element begleitet, dem intimsten Aspekt von Erzählungen über Sport: Es geht dann um Mikrogeschichte, um die Pfade, die diese zwischen Öffentlichem und Privatem, Allgemeinem und Besonderem eröffnet, wobei der Lese-Fokus auf das erlebende und erzählende Subjekt in den Vordergrund gelangt und Elemente der Erzählung als "bekennende", "meditative" oder "fragmentarische" (Auto)Biographie auftauchen lässt. In dem Artikel werden diese verschiedenen Ebenen der Erzählungen über Sport sowie die mit ihnen einhergehenden Konventionen qualitativer Sportwissenschaft diskutiert.

At its most a typical sports narrative records what happens in space and time. Alongside this traditional history of events there has emerged a research approach that might be called structural sports history. Its methods move in the world under the surface of facts, explored by researchers in ways that resemble archaeology. The aim is to uncover the changed human relationships and new forms of presence in sport—figurations of corporeality, space and time. Where the event-history approach recounts and recapitulates, the new approach works towards interpretation and understanding. These two are joined by yet a third element, the most intimate aspect of sports narratives: microhistory and the routes that it opens to the interfaces between the public and the private and the general and the particular, where the reader-oriented focus of the experiencing and narrating subject is necessarily foregrounded and at this point surface such elements of narrativity as the "confessional", the "meditative" and the " fragmentary" (auto)biography. The article describes different levels of a sports narrative and their conventions in qualitative sports research.

La narrativa típica del deporte, a lo máximo, registra lo que sucede en el tiempo y el espacio. A un lado de esta historia tradicional de eventos ha surgido un enfoque de investigación que puede denominarse historia estructural del deporte. Sus métodos se mueven por debajo de la superficie de los hechos explorados por los investigadores en formas que semejan a la arqueología. El objetivo es descubrir las relaciones humanas cambiantes y sus nuevas formas de presencia en el deporte – figuraciones de corporalidad, espacio y tiempo. Donde el enfoque de evento-historia relata y recapitula, este nuevo enfoque se dirige hacia la interpretación y la comprensión. Elementos que se vinculan aun por uno tercero, el mas íntimo aspecto de la narrativa deportiva: la microhistoria y los caminos que esta abre hacia las interfases entre lo público y lo privado y lo general y lo particular, en las que el foco del lector orientado en la experiencia y la materia narrativa se encuentran necesariamente fundamentadas al emerger elementos tales de narrativa como lo "confesional", lo "mediado" y la (auto)biografía "fragmentada" . El artículo describe diferentes niveles de una narrativa deportiva y sus convenciones en la investigación cualitativa del deporte.
