While Martin Luther King, Jr. is well known as one of the icons of the civil rights-era, his sermons and political speeches and writings have only recently been discovered as productive resources for political theorizing, for instance in debates on democratic theory. In this essay we want to approach Kings 'democratic theory' from a perspective of radical democracy. We will show how King proposed a broadened vision of democracy and how he understood democratization as a project of discursive change, initiated and supported by what is today called 'identity politics'. In his reflections on the role of emotions in political practice we also discover parallels to the concept of (radical) democratic ethics. While Kings deeply theological justification of political action cannot be fully reconciled with a post-foundationalist approach, we hold that a specifically radical democratic reading of his work is able to contribute to a systematization of Kings political philosophy and can also provide interesting thoughts for the debate on democratic theory and practice in general.... view less
