Blood and Books: Performing Code Switching

Abstract

"Sprachwechsel" ist ein linguistischer Begriff, der identifiziert, in welcher Weise Individuen kommunizieren und wie sie Unterschiedlichkeit in sozialen Beziehungen aushandeln. In diesem Beitrag versuche ich zu zeigen, dass kunstbasierte Forschung, die sich beispielsweise die Elemente Choreografie und Performance zunutze macht, einen angemessenen und wirksamen Kontext eröffnet, innerhalb dessen verbale und nonverbale Sprachwechsel untersucht werden können. Hierzu wird Blood and Books, eine Fallstudie über eine Tanz-Choreografie post-kolonialistischer Maori-Performances in Aotearoa (Neuseeland), beschrieben und hinsichtlich der Sprachwechsel analysiert. Der Beitrag wird gerahmt durch eine Diskussion der Frage, wie kunstbasierte Forschung in der Hochschulausbildung vermittelt werden kann. Hinweise hierzu gibt der im Beitrag selbst vollzogene reflexive Gebrauch umgangssprachlicher und formal(wissenschaftlich)er Terminologie und Konzepte.

Code switching is a linguistic term that identifies ways individuals use communication modes and registers to negotiate difference in social relations. This essay suggests that arts-based inquiry, in the form of choreography and performance, provides a suitable and efficacious location within which both verbal and nonverbal channels of code switching can be investigated. Blood and Books, a case study of dance choreography within the context of post-colonial Maori performance in Aotearoa/New Zealand, is described and analyzed for its performance of code switching. The essay is framed by a discussion of how arts-based research within tertiary higher education requires careful negotiation in the form of code switching, as performed by the author's reflexive use of vernacular and formal registers in the essay.

Cambio de registro es un término lingüístico que identifica la manera en que los individuos usan diferentes modos y registros de comunicación para negociar relaciones sociales. Este ensayo sugiere que la indagación basada en el arte, en forma de coreografía y performance, proporciona un espacio adecuado y eficaz en el que los canales de cambio de registro verbales y no verbales puedan ser investigados. Sangre y Libros, un estudio de caso sobre coreografía de danza en el contexto de actuación Maori post-colonial en Aotearoa/Nueva Zelanda, se describe y analiza por su representación de cambio de registro. El estudio está enmarcado dentro de una discusión de como la investigación basada en el arte, dentro de la educación superior terciaria, requiere una cuidadosa negociación en la forma de cambio de registro, tal y como ha sido representado por el uso reflexivo de registros vernáculos y formales que el autor ha realizado.
