Mittendrin statt nur dabei: Die ethnografische Erforschung von Gesundheit und Krankheit

Abstract

Der Artikel diskutiert die Potenziale und Herausforderungen von Ethnografie in Bezug auf den Forschungsgegenstand Gesundheit/Krankheit und verortet diese im Feld der multidisziplinären Gesundheitsforschung. Feldforschung und teilnehmende Beobachtung sind bewährte wie traditionsreiche Forschungsmethoden und Erkenntnisinstrumente zur Untersuchung von Krankheit und Gesundheit, scheinen bislang in der deutschsprachigen Gesundheitsforschung als Methode jedoch wenig etabliert bzw. institutionalisiert. Anhand von klassischer und neuerer ethnografischer Literatur werden vier zentrale Forschungsthemen mit einem Schwerpunkt auf die Verschränkungen von Körper- und Sozialität vorgestellt. Herausforderungen betreffen forschungspraktische und forschungsethische Fragen ebenso wie disziplinspezifische Akzeptanz- und Rezeptionsbarrieren in Wissenschaft und Praxis.

This article discusses the potentials and challenges of ethnography concerning the research subject of health and illness and locates this approach in the field of multidisciplinary health research. Fieldwork and participatory observation are reliable methods for the inquiry of various phenomena concerning health issues. Despite its rich tradition, ethnography has not been fully established and institutionalized in current German health research. We present four significant themes which focus on conjunctions of the body and the social, based on classic and recent ethnographic literature. The challenges of ethnographic health research are concerned with practical issues and research ethics, as well as barriers towards reception and acceptance within scientific disciplines and practitioners.
