Review: Verena Dreißig (2005). Interkulturelle Kommunikation im Krankenhaus. Eine Studie zur Interaktion zwischen Klinikpersonal und Patienten mit Migrationshintergrund

Abstract

Die Studie untersucht anhand einer von der Autorin in zwei Krankenhäusern durchgeführten – teilnehmende Beobachtung und offene Interviews kombinierenden – Feldforschung interkulturelle Kommunikation zwischen Personal und Patienten. Eingebettet ist dies in eine Analyse von Interaktion zwischen Personal und Patienten allgemein, d.h. unabhängig von der Frage kultureller Differenz. Das Buch liefert anschauliche Einblicke in die untersuchten Felder. Als wesentliches Ergebnis wird festgehalten, dass interkulturelle Kommunikation im Krankenhaus weniger problematisch verlaufe als häufig angenommen. Die Herleitung dieses Ergebnisses kann allerdings nicht wirklich nachvollzogen werden. Unter anderem beruht dies auf der Verwendung verschiedener Kulturbegriffe. Eine weitere Schwäche liegt in der nicht konsistenten Darstellung der angewandten Methoden. Die Lektüre empfiehlt sich daher eher denjenigen, die aus der Praxis kommen. Ihnen kann die auf der Fremdwahrnehmung der Feldforscherin beruhende Darstellung insbesondere zur Reflexion ihres Arbeitsalltags sowie ihres Umgangs mit Patienten und Patientinnen mit Migrationshintergrund dienen. An dieses Publikum richten sich auch die das Buch abschließenden Empfehlungen für die Praxis.

Based on participant observation and interviews which the author carried out in two hospitals, the study analyses intercultural communication between staff and patients with migrant backgrounds. This is embedded in a broader analysis of staff-patient relations in general, i.e., without regard to questions of cultural difference. The book provides vivid insights into the researched fields. Its main conclusion states that intercultural communication in hospitals is less problematic than is often assumed. It remains difficult, however, to understand how that conclusion was derived from the material presented. This problem is linked with, among other things, the use of different concepts of culture. A further shortcoming is the inconsistent accounts of methods applied. Thus, the book will be of interest especially to those coming from practice. To them, the account based on the fieldworker's external view may serve as a reflection of their own work practice and their dealing with patients of different cultural background. It is exactly that readership to whom the book’s practice-related suggestions and conclusions are addressed.

Basándose en la observación participante y las entrevistas que el autor llevó a cabo en dos hospitales, en este estudio se analiza la comunicación intercultural entre la plantilla y los pacientes con bagaje intercultural. El estudio se encuadra en un análisis más profundo sobre la relación paciente-personal, esto es, sin hacer referencia a los temas de la diferencia cultural. El libro ofrece las aportaciones vividas dentro del campo investigado. Como conclusión principal muestra que la comunicación intercultural en los hospitales es menos problemática de lo que a menudo se supone. Sin embargo, resulta difícil comprender cómo se derivó esa conclusión del material presentado. Ese problema se asocia, entre otras cosas, al uso de diferentes conceptos de cultura. Otro defecto es la inconsistente referencia a los métodos aplicados. Ello hace aconsejable una segunda lectura, especialmente para los practicantes. Para estos perfiles, la descripción basada en la visión externa del investigador de campo puede servir como reflexión sobre su propia práctica y sobre la relación con los pacientes con distintos bagajes culturales. Es exactamente a esos lectores a los que se dirigen las sugerencias de los relatos prácticos y las conclusiones.
