Comment: Thinking About Open Access - Concretely

Abstract

In einem gerade erschienenen Essay über Open Access (VALSINER, 2006) werden die Leser und Leserinnen mit einigen Behauptungen über eine die Zugänglichkeit von Veröffentlichungen faktisch nicht verbessernde Verschiebung der Publikationskosten von den Produzenten hin zu den Benutzern konfrontiert. Da konkrete, die Behauptungen unterstützende Instanzen und Fallstudien fehlen, zweifle ich, dass VALSINERs Kommentare in ihrer Abstraktheit, obwohl ich mit ihnen teilweise sympathisiere, unser Verständnis von Open Access weiterbringen können. Ich fordere eine differenzierende, konkrete Methode, um das Phänomen Open Access angemessen verstehen zu können und hierbei insbesondere die Frage, wer die Kosten trägt, die bei der Publikation von Forschungsresultaten anfallen.

In a recent review essay concerning open access (VALSINER, 2006), readers are confronted with some claims about the shifting of publication costs from the producer to the user without actually facilitating access to the products of scientific research. In the absence of concrete cases and case studies to substantiate the claims, I felt that the comments in their abstractness, while I sympathize with them, do not sufficiently advance our understanding of the issues involved in the open-access phenomenon. I am calling for a more differentiated, concrete method of dealing with open access and especially with the question of who is bearing the costs involved in publishing research results.

En un reciente ensayo sobre el acceso abierto (VALSINER, 2006), se confronta a los lectores con algunas ideas acerca de cambiar los costos de la publicación del productor al lector sin facilitar en realidad el acceso a los productos de la investigación científica. Ante la ausencia de casos concretos y estudios de éstos para dar substancia a tales ideas, siento que, aunque simpatizo con los comentarios en su abstraccción, éstos no avanzan suficientemente nuestra comprensión de los tópicos involucrados en el fenómeno del acceso abierto. Apelo por un método más concreto y diferenciado para abordar el acceso abierto y especialmente la pregunta de quién se hace cargo de los costos al publicar resultados de investigación.
