The case study methodology, which is frequently used in the research field of industrial relations, has advantages. A serious disadvantage in that it is often unclear where it is located in the large-scale statistical picture. In the context of mixed method designs, the possibility of the purposive selection of cases on the basis of cluster analyses is discussed in order to obtain typical case studies. If the sequential approach proves to be too time-consuming, simultaneous surveys or large-scale secondary data and case studies as well as overlapping information can be used to locate cases in typological analyses.... view less
