Abstract

In dieser Besprechung wird zunächst ein kurzer Überblick über die Nutzung qualitativer Methoden in der krimi­nologischen Forschung gegeben. Danach werden zwei Bücher diskutiert, die in einiger Hinsicht sehr unterschiedlich sind: Für NOAKS und WIN­CUP steht das "how to do it" im Vordergrund; ihr Buch richtet sich insoweit vor allem an Studierende oder an Forschende, die mit qualitativen Methoden nur wenig vertraut sind. Im Unterschied hierzu eröffnet der von POGREBIN herausgegebene Band viele Einblicke in das "how it has been done", wobei die empirischen Ergebnisse ebenso beleuchtet werden wie die jeweils verwandte Methodologie. Zusätzlich beschäftigen sich beide Bücher auch mit Fragen der Forschungsethik, auch dies allerdings in unterschiedlicher Weise. Ursächlich hierfür ist möglicherweise das Alter einiger der in Qualitative Approaches to Criminal Justice veröffentlichten Beiträge (allesamt Reprints, von denen einige bereits 1973 erstveröffentlicht wurden), vielleicht aber auch die unterschiedliche Reflektion von ethischen Fragen in nordamerikanischen und britischen Forschungsarbeiten.

This review essay provides a brief intro­duction to the use of qualitative methods in crimi­nological research, before moving on to describe the content of the two books. The books are quite different in a number of ways. NOAKS and WIN­CUP take the "how to do it" approach, making the book very useful for students and researchers new to qualitative methods. In contrast, POGREBIN's edited collection provides a large number of "how it has been done" examples with an equal focus on the findings as on the methodological approach. Although both books devote space to ethical di­lemmas, the nature of the dilemmas and how they are resolved varies. This is probably due to the age of some of the chapters within POGREBIN's book (all are reprints and date back to 1973) but may also reflect different ethical stances in the USA and UK.

Esta reseña aporta una breve introducción al uso de los métodos cualitativos en la investigación criminológica, antes de avanzar en la descripción del contenido de los dos libros. Los libros son bastante diferentes en distintas formas. NOAKS y WINCUP se aproximan desde el "cómo hacerlo", haciendo el libro muy útil para estudiantes e investigadores que comienzan en métodos cualitativos. En contraste, la colección editada por POGREBIN proporciona un gran número de ejemplos sobre "cómo ha sido hecho esto", centrados tanto en las conclusiones como en la aproximación metodológica. Si bien ambos libros dedican espacio a los dilemas éticos, la naturaleza de los dilemas y cómo son resueltos varía. Probablemente esto es debido a la antigüedad de algunos capítulos en el libro de POGREBIN (todos están reimpresos y datan de 1973), pero también puede ser reflejo de las diferentes posturas éticas en los Estados Unidos y el Reino Unido.
