The article shows how precarious care situations and care gaps in collective refugee accommodations in Germany during the pandemic met with everyday attempts of obstinate caring for one another. It is empirically based on 16 qualitative interviews with residents about their everyday experiences during the first and second wave of the pandemic. The interviews show that refugees could not – or only to a limited extent – trust state measures to sufficiently protect their health. Attempts to protect their own health in a self-organised way only allow for very limited improvements due to the (state-maintained) structural carelessness characterising their living situation.... view less
