Stand-up comedians embody a more or less clearly fictionalized version of themselves on stage. Performed comedic storytelling draws on the personal life of this stage persona. This article takes the narrative and performative characteristic of stand-up comedy and examines whether the use of the personal can be read as a re-actualization of the queer-/feminist notion of the political, where the private becomes the site of the political. I first explore the significance of the personal in queer-/feminist theory and politics. Second, I examine the role of the personal in neoliberally contextualized popular culture and whether this can be understood as a form of (de-)politicization of the personal. Drawing on theories of subjectivation and affect, I analyse Nanette, a stand-up comedy special by Hannah Gadsby. This analysis shows up the potential of feelings in the politicization of performative self-narration.... view less
