This article follows studies from sociology of work and sociology of organizations which highlight that narratives on digitalization (e. g. Industrie 4.0) are neither a proper empirical description of recent work in organizations nor ‘mere babble’. Rather, these narratives are powerful social phenomena and have an effect in organizations, but are also produced by organizations. This article therefore examines the interrelationship between narratives on digitalization and organizational practice. On the one hand, the article uses an empirical case from a consulting firm to show how digitalization narratives can have an effect in organizations. On the other hand, it presents an analytical perspective on how this interrelationship between digitalization narratives and organizational practice can be understood as well as corresponding implications for sociological research on digitalization.... view less
