Regional rural development studies can be considered multi-disciplinary, multi-approach, and multi-method, as they include different social and political perspectives. The aim of this paper is to contribute to the methodological debate on regional rural development studies based on the discussion of mixed methods. The proposed methodology is based on five stages of research: (1) the delimitation of the problem, (2) the distinction between research objectives, questions and hypotheses, (3) the definition of the frame of reference, which includes theoretical, conceptual, historical, geographical and possibly legal frameworks, (4) fieldwork, and (5) analysis of the results, discussion with the theoretical framework and conclusions. The results of the study help to overcome the dichotomy between quantitative and qualitative methods, and a multi-method discussion is proposed, with emphasis on studies applied to rural development.... view less

Los estudios del desarrollo rural regional pueden considerarse multidisciplinarios, multienfoque, y multimétodo, por incluir distintas perspectivas sociales y políticas. El objetivo de este artículo es contribuir al debate metodológico de los estudios del desarrollo rural regional con base en la discusión sobre métodos mixtos. La metodología que se propone se apoya en cinco etapas de investigación: (1) la delimitación de la problemática, (2) la distinción entre objetivos, preguntas e hipótesis de investigación, (3) la definición del marco de referencia, que incluye los marcos teórico, conceptual, histórico, geográfico y, posiblemente, jurídico, (4) el trabajo de campo y (5) el análisis de los resultados, la discusión con el marco teórico y las conclusiones. Los resultados del estudio contribuyen a superar la dicotomía entre métodos cuantitativos y cualitativos y se propone una discusión multimétodo, con énfasis en los estudios aplicados al desarrollo rural.... view less
