Der Beitrag gibt einen Überblick über den Stand der Forschung zur deskriptiven und substantiellen Repräsentation von Frauen. Die deskriptive Repräsentation von Frauen in Parlamenten steigt weltweit. In institutioneller Hinsicht ist dieser Anstieg insbesondere auf Quoten zurückzuführen. Der Einsatz von Quoten ist sowohl in der deutschen verfassungsrechtlichen wie in der internationalen politiktheoretischen Debatte umstritten und wird mit Chancen und Risiken verbunden. Eine Chance für erhöhte deskriptive Repräsentation wird in der verbesserten substantiellen Repräsentation von Frauen gesehen. Empirische Studien weisen unter Einbezug einer Reihe von Kontextfaktoren tendenziell auf einen positiven Zusammenhang hin. Doch der Fokus auf den Zusammenhang deskriptiver und substantieller Repräsentation wird inzwischen auch aus empirischer Perspektive problematisiert. This contribution reviews the state of research on women's descriptive and substantial representation. Women's descriptive representation in parliaments is increasing worldwide. Institutionally, this upward trend is particularly due to quotas. The use of quotas is controversial in German constitutional law as well as in international debates in political theory. Opportunities and risks are discussed. Improving women's substantial representation is one opportunity that is related to increased descriptive representation. In due consideration of contextual factors, empirical studies rather tend to indicate a positive relationship. However, the problems of the focus on the relationship between descriptive and substantial representation are now also expounded from an empirical perspective. Recent research design proposals in this vein provoke normative queries.... view less
