Die fotohistorische Forschung zur NS-Diktatur als interdisziplinäre Bildwissenschaft

Abstract

Die visuelle Überlieferung aus der Zeit der NS-Diktatur lässt sich nur interdisziplinär erforschen. Die fotografische Massenkommunikation, die im NS-Staat dem Propagan-daministerium unterstellt wurde, kann mit herkömmlichen zeithistorischen Methoden, aber auch mit dem kunstwissenschaftlichen Instrumentarium allein nicht umfassend erklärt werden. Qualitative Ansätze etwa der Kommunikationswissenschaft bieten zusätzliche Möglichkeiten des Erkenntnisfortschritts - nicht zuletzt im Hinblick auf die private Fotografie. Im Paradigma der "Bildwissenschaft" können sich die Kompetenzen der Einzeldisziplinen neu verbinden und zum differenzierten Verständnis der NS-Herrschaft einen wichtigen Beitrag leisten. Der Aufsatz skizziert zunächst die fotohistorische Erforschung der NS-Zeit seit den 1980er-Jahren. Gefragt wird dann nach der Überlieferungssituation in den Archiven und den Auswirkungen der Digitalisierung. Eine zentrale These lautet dabei, dass sich das Problem der bisher oft mangelhaften Klassifizierung und Erschließung von Fotomaterial durch dessen digitale Zirkulation weiter verschärft.

Visual records from the period of the National Socialist dictatorship require interdisciplinary research. Photographic mass communication which, under the National Socialist regime, was under control of the Ministry of Propaganda, cannot be adequately explained with the customary methods of contemporary historical research or with those of art history alone. Qualitative approaches such as those adopted within communication studies offer opportunities to enrich our knowledge in this field in, for example, the field of amateur photography. The paradigm of 'visual studies' can combine skills acquired in the various disciplines in new ways and help us to refine our understanding of the National Socialist regime. This essay begins by outlining historical research since the 1980s which deals with the photography of this period. It then gives an account of the state of records in archives and the effects of digitalisation. The author concludes that the digital circulation of visual archive materials has caused the past shortcomings of the classification and reproduction of photographic material to become even more acute.
