Diese Arbeit zeigt auf, dass die zwei prominenten, aber gegensätzliche Antworten auf diese Frage von Müller (2016) und Mudde/Kaltwasser (2017) aufgrund begrifflicher Vorentscheidungen zustande kommen, die dem Populismus implizit eine von außen kommende pluralistische Norm anlegen bzw. seine Gefahr für die Demokratie normativ einebnen. Mithilfe der Rechtsphilosophie Immanuel Kants soll zur Aufklärung dieser Kontroverse beigetragen werden, indem aus der kantischen Kritik der despotischen Demokratie ein normativer Maßstab für die Beurteilung der Demokratiekompatibilität des Populismus gewonnen wird.... view less

Is populism compatible with democracy? This paper shows that the two prominent but opposing theoretical answers to this question by Müller (2016) and Mudde/Kaltwasser (2017) are based on conceptual preliminary decisions that implicitly impose an externally generated pluralistic norm on populism or normatively neutralize its threat to democracy. With the help of Immanuel Kant's philosophy of law, the aim is to contribute to the clarification of this controversy by deriving from Kant's critique of despotic democracy a normative criterion for assessing the democratic compatibility of populism.... view less
