Zu Beginn des Jahres 2021 putschte sich das Militär in Myanmar erneut an die Macht. Doch bereits während der Militärdiktatur von 1962-2010 versuchte das Regime das ethnisch sehr gespaltene Land durch Zwang, Ideologie und Gewalt zu vereinen, was jedoch größtenteils misslang. Ausgehend von dem theoretischen Ansatz zum Nation-Building stellt diese Arbeit anhand von drei Faktoren das Scheitern des Nation-Building-Prozesses in Myanmar dar und untersucht anschließend unterteilt in zwei aufeinanderfolgenden Zeitperioden kontrastiv, inwieweit sich die chinesischen Eingriffe in die inneren Angelegenheiten Myanmars auf den Prozess ausgewirkt haben. At the beginning of 2021, the military in Myanmar has once again seized power. However, during the military dictatorship between 1962-2010, the regime had already tried to unite the ethnically divided country by means of ideology, force, and coercion; a process that failed. After introducing the term nation-building as a theoretical concept, this paper presents the failure of the nation-building process in Myanmar on the basis of three factors. By dividing the Sino-Burmese relations in two successive periods, the study analyses subsequently to what extent Chinese interventions in Myanmar's internal affairs have affected the nation-building process. The results reveal how strongly the success of the military regime depended on China’s influence.... view less
